About Us – Swakopmund Carnival Association (SKV)

The Swakopmund Carnival Association (SKV) was established with a deep-rooted commitment to preserve and perpetuate the unique tradition of Carnival in all its facets. Our association, with unwavering joy and dedication, represents the vibrant German carnival culture, which we have been celebrating in Namibia for decades, sharing it with the local community.

Our mission is to firmly anchor the Swakopmund Carnival as a significant cultural event in the tradition. To this end, we organise and promote various festive events and activities that embody the vibrant, joyful, and sometimes irreverent world of Carnival. Together with other Carnival associations from the region and abroad, we work tirelessly to preserve the rich culture and traditions of Carnival, ensuring they continue to thrive and evolve.

The carnival season in Swakopmund is a time of inclusivity and celebration. It traditionally begins with the "Narrenwecker" (Narren Waker) – the start of advance ticket sales for the official evenings. Around a month later, during a festive carnival week, the festivities begin with the Prinzenball, where the new prince and princess are presented. This is followed by the German Büttenabend (German Comedy Evenings), the popular international evenings specially designed for the English- and Afrikaans-speaking communities so that they too can experience the carnival tradition. For our youngest visitors, there is the children's Carnival, also known as "Küskika," where the children's prince and princess are crowned. Every other year, a "Ladies' Evening" is also organised, during which only women are admitted. The grand finale is the cheerful street parade followed by the "Kehraus" (cleaning up) on the same day.

Part of our commitment is also supporting local charities. Surplus funds from our activities are reinvested in the community, supporting various charitable projects that benefit people, animals, and other causes. Our goal is not only to celebrate Carnival, but also to foster togetherness and support within society.

The SKV invites everyone to participate in this tradition and enjoy the Carnival in Swakopmund to the fullest – with good humour, colourful costumes, and lots of fun!
